[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀠𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (ḍhakkaï, “to cover”), denomimalized from *𑀠𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*ḍhakk, “cover”), from a substrate. Cognate with Assamese ঢকা (dhoka), Hindi ढकना (ḍhaknā), and Punjabi ਢੱਕਣਾ (ḍhakkaṇā). Doublet of ঢাক (ḍhak) and ঢাকনা (ḍhakona).

Etymology 2
[edit]The word is generally thought to originate from ঢাক (ḍhak), which has several meanings in Bengali. It either refers to the Butea monosperma, a tree commonly found in the area, or pays homage to the local dhak instrument played by the order of Governor Islam Khan I during the inauguration of the city in 1610.[1]
