[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle Bengali ডাঠ (ḍaṭh), from Old Bengali ঢাঠ (ḍhāṭha), from Prakrit 𑀥𑀝𑁆𑀞 (dhaṭṭha), from Sanskrit धृष्ट (dhṛṣṭá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰr̥ṣṭás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰr̥štás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰr̥s-tós (“bold, daring”), from *dʰers- (“to be bold, to dare”), an *-s extension of *dʰer- (“to hold, support”). Cognate with Assamese ডাঠ (dath), Odia ଧିଟ (dhiṭa, “shameless”), Maithili 𑂛𑂲𑂘 (ḍhīṭh, “firm”), Bhojpuri ढीँठ (ḍhī̃ṭh, “insolent”), Gujarati ધીટ (dhīṭ), Marathi दाट (dāṭ, “dense; thick”), Hindi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh), Awadhi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh, “obstinate”), Punjabi ਢੱਠ (ḍhaṭṭha).
