Etymology

[edit]

Likely from Hindi खादी (khādī), popularized by Gandhi, as a coinage with influence from खड्ड (khaḍḍ, deep pit).[1] Biswas (2004) traces it to Gujarati ખદ્દર (khaddar).[2] Derived from Proto-Indo-Aryan *khadda (coarse cloth), which is possibly an areal word, related to Proto-Dravidian *kaṇṭai.[3] Doublet of খদ্দর (khoddor).
