From Sanskrit কৃকৰ (kṛkara, a kind of partridge), from Proto-Indo-European *kerk- (crow, raven), probably an onamatopoeia. Cognate with Ancient Greek κόραξ (kórax), Old Irish cerc (hen), Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬵𐬭𐬐𐬀𐬙𐬀𐬝 (kahrkatat̰, rooster), obsolete German Ruch, Old English hrōc (English rook).
