Borrowed from Classical Persian کبوتر (kabūtar), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kapáwtas; displaced native term কপোত (kopōt), from the same source. Compare Hindustani کبوتر / कबूतर (kabūtar), Chittagonian হইতুর (hoitur).
