[edit]Inherited from Sanskrit অঞ্জস্ (añjas, “ointment, mixture”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hánȷ́as, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánǰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃éngʷos (“fat, grease”, from *h₃engʷ- (“to smear, anoint”)). Cognate with Garhwali आँजु (āñju, “collyrium”), Latin unguen, dialectal German Anke.
