Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘭𑘰𑘭𑘳 (sāsu), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀲𑀽 (sāsū), from Sanskrit श्वश्रू (śvaśrū́). Cognate with Gujarati સાસુ (sāsu), Hindi सास (sās).
