Etymology
[edit]Probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *séh₂ls (“salt”); compare Ancient Greek ᾰ̔́λς (háls, “sea; salt”).[1]
A folk etymology explains the word as स- (sa-, “with”) + लीला (līlā, “playfulness”), literally “the playful one”, which would refer to the erratic motion of waves on the water surface. However, this does not explain the short इ (i) sound.
