Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘫𑘲𑘢𑘘𑘲 (śīpaṭī), 𑘭𑘲𑘽𑘢𑘘𑘲 (sīṃpaṭī), 𑘭𑘲𑘽𑘢𑘳𑘘𑘲 (sīṃpuṭī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀙𑁂𑀧𑁆𑀧 (cheppa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit शेप्या (śepyā́), a feminine form of शेप (śépa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *šáypas, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyp-o- (“pole, stick”) (compare Latin cippus).[1][2][3] Cognate with Konkani शेंपडी (śẽpḍī, śẽpaḍī), Hindi छिपकली (chipaklī).
The extension -𑀟- (-ḍa-) was devoiced through progressive voicing assimilation with the preceding /p/.
