Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyk- (“belt, strap”). Cognate with Lithuanian šikšnà; also compare Finnish hihna, a Baltic borrowing. By surface analysis, शिक् (śik) + -य (-ya).

- a kind of loop or swing made of rope and suspended from either end of a pole or yoke to receive a load, carrying swing (also applied to the load so carried)
- c. 1200 BCE – 1000 BCE, Atharvaveda 9.3.6:
- यानि तेऽन्तः शिक्यान्य्आबेधू रण्याय कम् ।
प्र ते तानि चृतामसि शिवा मानस्य पत्नी न उद्धिता तन्वे भव ॥- yāni teʼntaḥ śikyānyābedhū raṇyāya kam.
pra te tāni cṛtāmasi śivā mānasya patnī na uddhitā tanve bhava. - We loosen the loops which men have bound within thee, to tie and hold.
