Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáyṣas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáyšas, probably from Proto-Indo-European *wéys-os, from *weys- (“to increase; to produce”).[1] The "dress" meaning is a semantic extension from "work" > "worked exterior" > "dress". The Sanskrit root is विष् (viṣ).[2]
