[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wástram (“garment, cloth”), from Proto-Indo-European wés-tro-m, from *wes- (“to wear”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬭𐬀 (vastra), Middle High German wester (“christening dress”), Ancient Greek ϝέστρᾱ (wéstrā), Old English werian (whence English wear).
