Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wā́ȷ́as, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wā́ȷ́as, from Proto-Indo-European *weǵ- (“lively”). Cognate with Latin vegeō, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌺𐌰𐌽 (wakan), English wake.
