Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀺𑀅 (laḍḍia), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀮𑀸𑀟𑁆𑀬 (*lāḍya), ultimately from Sanskrit लड् (laḍ, “to play”). Compare Marathi लाड (lāḍ).
