In senses 1 and 2, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃riHtís, from an extension *h₃r-ey-H- of the root *h₃er-, and thereby a direct parallel to Proto-Germanic *rīþiz (> archaic English rith). Sense 4, from *h₂er- and cognate with Latin rītus (rite, custom, usage).
