Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀼𑀤𑁆𑀤𑁂𑀇 (muddei), from Sanskrit मुद्रयति (mudrayati, seals), derived from मुद्रा (mudrā, a seal). The Sanskrit word is possibly an Iranian borrowing, from Proto-Iranian *mudrā, possibly ultimately from Akkadian 𒈬𒊬 (mušarû, object bearing a royal inscription), from Sumerian 𒈬𒊬 (mu-sar /musar/), from 𒈬 (mu, name, fame) + 𒊬 (sar, to write). See the Sanskrit entry for मुद्रा (mudrā) for more.
