Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Dravidian, ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *mīn; compare Tamil மீன் (mīṉ). Alternative derivations from Proto-Indo-European (compare Ancient Greek μαίνη (maínē, “blotched picarel”), English minnow, Russian мин (min, “burbot”), Latvian mitrs (“moist”)) are less likely.
