Borrowed from Dravidian, ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *mīn; compare Tamil மீன் (mīṉ). Alternative derivations from Proto-Indo-European (compare Ancient Greek μαίνη (maínē, blotched picarel), English minnow, Russian мин (min, burbot), Latvian mitrs (moist)) are less likely.
