Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]No etymology. The connection with Russian мен (men, “burbot”), Lithuanian ménkė (“haddock”) and Sanskrit मीन (mīna, “Pisces; sprat”) is extremely doubtful. Strömberg hesitatingly attempts to connect it with μαίνομαι (maínomai, “to rage”), by interpreting it as the "wild raging fish".
