Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘹𑘘𑘜𑘹 (bheṭaṇe), from Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (bhiṭṭijjaï, “to meet”), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆 (*bhiṭ). Cognate with Gujarati ભેટવું (bheṭvũ), Sindhi ڀيٽَڻُ / भेटणु (bheṭaṇu), Nepali भेट्नु (bheṭnu), Odia ଭେଟିବା (bheṭibā), Bengali ভেটা (bheṭa). Related to भेट (bheṭ).
