Etymology

[edit]

Derived from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀩𑀽𑀭 (*būra, powder) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) +‎ -ना (-nā, verbal suffix). Doublet of बूर (būr, chaff, husk; sawdust), बूरा (būrā, coarse sugar), बुरकी (burkī, a pinch (of salt etc.)), and बुरबुराना (burburānā, to sprinkle).

Platts, however, derives it from metathesis of an unattested *बुकरना (bukarnā), an alternative form of बुकटना (bukaṭnā, to be clawed, scratched), which is a rare or unused intransitive form of बकोटना (bakoṭnā, to claw, scratch).
