Etymology
[edit]Onomatopoeic, imitating the speech of non-Indo-Aryan language speakers. Compare Ancient Greek βάρβαρος (bárbaros), Latin balbus, Czech blblati, Lithuanian balbė́ti, Russian болтать (boltatʹ).[1] A late borrowing from Ancient Greek has also been suggested.
