From Proto-Indo-Aryan *paHyúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHyúš, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect) (whence also Sanskrit पाति (pā́ti)). Cognate with Ancient Greek πῶυ (pôu, flock of sheep).
