[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *paHyúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHyúš, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (“to protect”) (whence also Sanskrit पाति (pā́ti)). Cognate with Ancient Greek πῶυ (pôu, “flock of sheep”).
