Etymology

Of uncertain origin. The original meaning is either "size, measure" (for which compare especially पल (pala, a measure of weight)), or "skin, leather" (for which compare Ancient Greek πέλλα (pélla, bowl), पालवी (pālavī, a kind of vessel)).
