Etymology 2
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Mayrhofer considers potential connections to words such as पालवी (pālavī, “a kind of vessel”), पल्ल (palla, “a large granary, barn”), and Ancient Greek πελίκη (pelíkē, “ceramic container”) to be unlikely, as the original meaning is probably "weight, mass" and no "container" meanings are attested. He is also skeptical of etymologies linking the word to Proto-Dravidian *paḷ- (“to glitter, flash”), whence Tamil பளபள (paḷapaḷa, “to shine, glitter”).
Noun
[edit]पल • (pala) stem, n
- a particular weight = 4 karṣas = 1/100 tulā
- a particular fluid measure
- a particular measure of time (= 1/60 ghaṭī)
