Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Often taken as परि (pari, “around, about”) + अङ्कस् (aṅkas, “bend, curve”). However, Mayrhofer suggests that this may be a folk etymology, and that the word was borrowed from a foreign language, perhaps Dravidian or Elamite.
