Etymology

Compound of नील (nīla, dark blue/black) +‎ कण्ठ (kaṇṭha, throat), referring to the Hindu belief that Shiva has a blue throat as a result of swallowing poison that arose during the churning of the ocean. The adjective नीलग्रीव (nīlagrīva) was already applied to Rudra since the time of the Yajur Veda.
