Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀡𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀤𑀺 (ṇappadi), from Sanskrit ज्ञाप्यते (jñāpyate), from Sanskrit ज्ञा (jñā), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃- (to know). Cognate to Punjabi ਨਾਪਣਾ (nāpṇā), Odia ନାପିବା (nāpibā).
