Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀣𑁄𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀤𑀺 (thoppadi), from Sanskrit *स्तोप्यते (stopyate, it is obstructed). Compare Marathi थोपणे (thopṇe).
