Inherited from Old Marathi तुटणे (tuṭaṇe), from Prakrit 𑀝𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (ṭuṭṭaï, “to break”), ultimately from Sanskrit तृद् (tṛd, “to cleave, split”). Cognate to Hindi टूटना (ṭūṭnā).
