Etymology

    From Proto-Indo-European *terd- (to drill, bore, split); compare Lithuanian trandė́ti (to thresh, grind, (of worms) to bite) and trandìs (woodworm), as well as Old Church Slavonic тродь (trodĭ, tree sponge).
