Inherited from Prakrit 𑀢𑀺𑀮 (tila), from Sanskrit तिल (tila).[1][2] Compare Punjabi ਤਿਲ (til) / تِل (til), Gujarati તલ (tal), Marathi तीळ (tīḷ), Bengali তিল (til), Assamese তিল (til).

Borrowed from Munda, compare Korku [script needed] (telamiɲ, sesame).[1] Alternatively, related to Ossetian тиллӕг (tillæg, grain, corn).[2]
