[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tanHúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tanHúš, from Proto-Indo-European *tn̥h₂ús (“thin”). Cognate with Latin tenuis, Ancient Greek τανύω (tanúō), Old English þynne (whence English thin).
