Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ráyas (“vastness”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬢𐬵 (zraiiaŋh, “sea”), Northern Kurdish zirye (“sea”), Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎹 (d-r-y /draya/) (whence Persian دریا (daryâ, “sea”)).
