From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́áwšas (pleasure, liking), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵéws-o-s. Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (zaoša, liking), Parthian 𐫉𐫇𐫢 (zwš).
