Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀪𑀸 (jibbhā) , from Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā́), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́iźʰwáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH, from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Cognate with Gujarati જીભ (jībh), Konkani जीभ (jībh), Nepali जिब्रो (jibro), Punjabi ਜੀਭ (jībh), Bengali জিভ (jibh), Marathi जीभ (jībh), Odia ଜିଭ (jibha), Romani čhib, Sinhalese දිව (diwa) and more distantly with English tongue. Doublet of जिह्वा (jihvā) and ज़बान (zabān), a tatsama and a Persian borrowing.
