Etymology

Borrowed from Persian زیادتی (ziyâdati), from Arabic زِيَادَةِ (ziyādati). Related to जादा (jādā). Compare Gujarati જાસ્તી (jāstī), Kannada ಜಾಸ್ತಿ (jāsti), dialectal Punjabi ਜਾਸਤੀ (jāstī), Bengali জাস্তি (jasti).

Usage notes

• जास्त (jāsta), अधिक (adhik) and कमी (kamī) are used to explicitly indicate the comparative degree of adjectives.

  जास्त हुशार ― jāsta huśār ― smarter, more intelligent

  अधिक हुशार ― adhik huśār ― smarter, more intelligent

  कमी हुशार ― kamī huśār ― less smart, less intelligent

• सर्वात (जास्त) is one way to indicate the superlative degree of adjectives.

  सर्वात (जास्त) हुशार ― sarvāt (jāsta) huśār ― smartest, most intelligent
