From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ámbʰas (tooth, jaw), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵómbʰos (tooth). Cognate with Pashto ژامه (žā́ma, jaw), Ancient Greek γόμφος (gómphos).
