Etymology
[edit]From an unattested छग (chaga) (compare छाग (chā́ga)) + -ल (-la), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sčágas (compare Ossetian цӕҕӕ (“billy-goat”) and Wakhi čəɣ̌ (“kid”)), either from a potential Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱégos (“goat, sheep”) (compare Proto-Germanic *skēpą),[1] or a borrowing from a substrate language.[2]
