Etymology

Feminine of चिट्टा (ciṭṭā, bright, white). Per Turner, ultimately a borrowing of Proto-Nuristani *crittá, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwitrás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwit-ró-s, from *ḱweyt- (to shine). Related to Sanskrit श्वित्र (śvitrá), English white.
