Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘓𑘰𑘯𑘜𑘹 (cāḷaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀘𑀸𑀮𑁂𑀇 (cālei), from Sanskrit चालयति (cālayati). Compare Gujarati ચાળવું (cāḷvũ), Hindustani چَالْنَا (cālnā) / चालना (cālnā), Nepali चाल्नु (cālnu), Maithili चालब (cālab) / 𑒔𑒰𑒪𑒥 (cālaba), Odia ଚାଳିବା (cāḷibā), ଚଲାଇବା (calāibā), Bengali চালা (cala), Assamese চালা (sala), Sinhalese සලනවා (salanawā), හලනවා (halanawā), Dhivehi ހަލަނީ (halanī).
