[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀖𑁄𑀟𑀕 (ghoḍaga), from Sanskrit घोटक (ghoṭaka), ultimately from Dravidian. Southworth reconstructs the Proto-Dravidian word as Proto-Dravidian *kHutt with the glottal fricative *h and Krishnamurti reconstructs the word as Proto-Dravidian *kut-ir-ay from Proto-Dravidian *kut-i.
