Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘑𑘰𑘭𑘜𑘹 (ghāsaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀖𑀸𑀲𑀇 (ghāsaï), from Sanskrit घर्षति (gharṣati), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰers- (to rub, scrape). Cognate with Konkani घास्चे (ghāsce), Gujarati ઘસવું (ghasvũ), Assamese ঘঁহা (ghõha), Sinhalese ගානවා (gānawā). Related to घर्षण (gharṣaṇ, friction).
