Etymology

From गो (go, “cow”) +‎ पा (pā, “protecting, guarding”), the latter component from Proto-Indo-European *péh₂-s, from the root *peh₂- (“to guard”).

     Agni, when, born thou lookedst on all creatures, like a brisk herdsman moving round his cattle.
