Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin. आगार (āgāra) was probably the original form, while अगार (agāra) was secondary. Has been taken to be from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ger- (“to gather”); compare ग्राम (grāma, “village”), Ancient Greek ᾰ̓γορᾱ́ (ăgorā́, “assembly, market”)).
