[edit]Inherited from Prakrit *𑀅𑀟𑁆 (*aḍ, “obstruct, stop”), borrowed from Dravidian, whence Tamil அடை (aṭai). Related to अड़ना (aṛnā). Cognate with Punjabi ਅੱਡਾ (aḍḍā, “place, stand”), Marathi अड्डा (aḍḍā).
