Borrowed from Sanskrit अन्तर (ántara), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hántaras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hántaras, from a merger of two Proto-Indo-European adjectives with different initial laryngeals:

• *h₁énteros (“inner; what is inside”), derived from the adverb *h₁entér (“between”), whence also Sanskrit अन्तर् (antár). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎠𐎫𐎼 (aⁿtar, “among, within”), Old Latin *interos (whence Latin interior (“inner, interior”), intrā (“inside, within”)), Venetic 𐌀𐌍𐌕𐌓𐌀 (antra, “within”), Ancient Greek ἔντερον (énteron, “intestine, bowel, belly”) and Old Armenian ընդերք (ənderkʻ, “entrails”). Compare English inner and innards for similar formations. See also अन्त्र (ántra).
• *h₂énteros (“other, beyond, second”), from a lost adverb *h₂entér. Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬧𐬙𐬀𐬭𐬀 (aṇtara), Ossetian ӕндӕ́р (ændǽr, “other, different, else”), Lithuanian añtras (“second, secondary”), Old Latin *anteros (whence Latin anterior (“foremost; former”, comparative)) and Proto-Germanic *anþeraz (“other, second”), whence English other.
