Developed from ܪܲܒܵܐ (rabbā, “master”) + -ܲܢ (-an, “our”), literally “our master”. The original meaning of “Our master” is not felt and hence this word is used as its own noun; compare also in ܪܲܒܝܼ (rabī, “professor; rabbi”, literally “my master”).
