Inherited from Aramaic דַּירָא (dayrā), related to the verb ܕܵܐܹܪ (dāˀēr, to circle, dwell) of the noun pattern 1a23ā; compare Arabic دَيْر (dayr) and Hebrew דִּיר (dír). The latter noun is an occupational noun derived from the former; hence compare Arabic دَيَّار (dayyār) and Hebrew דַּיָּר (dayár).
