Developed from ܪܲܒܵܐ (rabbā, master) +‎ -ܝܼ (, my), literally my master. The original meaning of “My master” is not felt and hence this word is used as its own noun; compare also in ܪܲܒܲܢ (rabban, monk, literally our master).
