Developed from ܪܲܒܵܐ (rabbā, “master”) + -ܝܼ (-ī, “my”), literally “my master”. The original meaning of “My master” is not felt and hence this word is used as its own noun; compare also in ܪܲܒܲܢ (rabban, “monk”, literally “our master”).
