[edit]Derived from the verb ܦܵܠܹܛ (pālēṭ, “to escape, leave”); compare Hebrew פָּלִיט (palít). The sense of “planet” is a semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac and phono-semantic matching of Ancient Greek πλᾰνήτης (plănḗtēs).
